Canadian Muslims for Palestine (CMP) is a nonprofit, national, and grassroots organization dedicated to fostering justice for Palestine by educating the Canadian public about Palestine and its historical and religious heritage, and by strengthening community engagement through mobilization and advocacy. CMP is a Canadian Islamic organization, and it was founded by Canadians in 2003 in Montreal, Quebec.

CMP is guided by the foundational teachings of Islam, drawn from the Qur’an and the prophetic example. These teachings provide a comprehensive ethical framework that informs CMP’s values, decision‑making, and public conduct.

Canadian Muslims for Palestine (CMP) is a Canadian Islamic organization focused on promoting freedom, peace, justice, and dignity for Palestine and Palestinians.

The commitment to justice is rooted in the Islamic tradition, which calls on people to stand firmly for fairness and truth. The Qur’an teaches: “Stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to God, even against yourselves or your parents or your kin…” (Qur’an 5:135)

As Canadians, we share a collective responsibility to support policies that uphold our national values of fairness, liberty, and justice for all. These shared principles guide our work in advocating for the rights and dignity of Palestinians, both in Canada and abroad.

OBJECTIVES OF CANADIAN MUSLIMS FOR PALESTINE

I. EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Through education and outreach, CMP aims to raise awareness about the ongoing Israeli occupation of Palestinian land, which remains one of the longest-standing occupations in modern history. CMP strives to humanize Palestinians, helping Canadians see them not as distant figures in a conflict, but as individuals who share universal values—freedom, dignity, and justice.

CMP’s work also highlights the systemic human rights violations in the West Bank and Gaza, the struggles of over seven million Palestinian refugees, and the discriminatory policies affecting Palestinian citizens of Israel. These issues are rarely covered in mainstream discourse, and CMP believes that informed Canadians will demand a fairer approach to Middle East policy.

II. ADVOCACY FOR A BALANCED CANADIAN POLICY

CMP works to raise awareness across Canadian society and to promote a just, rights‑based, viable, and lasting resolution to the situation in Palestine. Our advocacy engages government officials to uphold international law and advance concrete steps toward peace and accountability.

CMP envisions a just and durable solution grounded in:

  1. religious freedom for people of all faiths, including full access to places of worship
  2. self‑determination for the Palestinian people and the ability to build thriving, sustainable communities
  3. respect for human rights and the implementation of international law and relevant UN resolutions

UN Security Council Resolutions 242, 465, and 2334 affirm that the West Bank, Gaza, and East Jerusalem are occupied territories, and that all measures taken to alter their status — including settlement expansion, land confiscation, and demographic changes — have no legal validity under international law.

III. COMMUNITY SERVICES AND SUPPORT

CMP works to support Palestinian Canadians and other affected communities by ensuring they have access to the resources and opportunities needed to live with peace, security, and dignity in Canada. We hope to assist families navigate challenges as they build their lives in Canada.

CMP also advocates to ensure that the concerns and lived experiences of Palestinian Canadians and other communities are understood, respected, and meaningfully reflected in the development of Canadian policy. When policies fall short of upholding these rights, CMP seeks to challenge or improve such policies.

IV. NETWORKING

CMP works in partnership with other Palestinian and human‑rights organizations that share similar mandates and objectives. Through these collaborations, CMP strengthens its advocacy efforts and amplifies the voices of affected communities.

CMP also seeks to build relationships with Islamic organizations across Canada, encouraging their support for Palestine, Palestinian Canadians, and other communities facing related challenges.

Historical Significance

Palestine, and particularly Jerusalem, holds profound spiritual and historical importance for Muslims around the world. At the heart of Jerusalem lies Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, the third holiest site in Islam after Mecca and Medina. It was the first qiblah (direction of prayer) for Muslims and the site of the miraculous night journey (Isra and Mi’raj) of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), where he ascended to the heavens. This sacred connection makes Jerusalem not only a place of worship but a symbol of divine presence and unity in the Islamic faith.

“Exalted is He who took His servant (Prophet Muhammad peace be upon him) by the night from Masjid al-Haram (Mecca) to Masjid al Aqsa (Jerusalem), whose surroundings We have blessed to show him Our signs.” (Qur’an 17:1)

Beyond its religious significance, Palestine is deeply woven into the legacy of many prophets revered in Islam, including Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), Dawud (David), Sulayman (Solomon), and Isa (Jesus), peace be upon them all. The land is a living testament to Islamic history and heritage. For Muslims, the preservation and protection of these sacred sites is a collective responsibility, transcending borders and cultures. The ongoing struggles faced by Palestinians also evoke a strong sense of solidarity, compassion, and duty among Muslims, who view the cause of Palestine not just as a political issue, but as a moral and spiritual obligation.

Muslim pilgrims seek spiritual renewal in the three cities Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told us to visit: Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem.

There are those among us who say that if Mecca is Muslim’s soul, Jerusalem is a Muslim’s heart.
